Beyond Compliance
Compliance is observable, but it does not tell us whether a student is learning, regulated, safe, connected, or included. A student may appear compliant while feeling overwhelmed, anxious, confused, or shut down.
Behaviour can give us information about a learner's needs, environment, relationships, regulation, communication, and sense of safety.
Imagine…asking a student to begin an assignment.
They say no, put their head down, leave the room, or refuse to participate.
Instead of asking only, “How do I stop this?”
Try asking, “What is this telling me?”
